Nevada Notaries, who are not attorneys, are not allowed to assist you in drafting, preparing, selecting, completing or understanding a document or transaction. Important documents (such as a will) need to be prepared and explained by a legal professional, (like your family attorney). Nevada Notaries do not prepare documents or give advice.
A Notary Public is a state appointed official who acts as an impartial witness between parties. Notaries serve the public by verifying the identity of a signer through acceptable forms of identification documents or cards. In other words, by appearing before a Notary and presenting valid ID, the Notary can make sure you are who you say you are. This helps to deter fraud. Once the document is signed and the Notary affixes their seal of office, the document can then be considered authentic and trusted. Many important documents are not legally binding unless notarized. This process of certifying documents dates back to the Roman Empire and further in one form or another.
